Jacob Millis helps entrepreneurs, business owners, and high-net-worth individuals navigate sophisticated tax and estate planning decisions with a focus on reducing unnecessary tax exposure and improving long-term financial outcomes.
With approximately a decade of experience advising individuals and businesses on complex tax matters, Jacob brings a broad perspective to planning. His work has included advising high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families on estate planning strategies designed to minimize transfer taxes, as well as helping entrepreneurs evaluate tax-efficient approaches to business and personal financial decisions.
At Covello Tax Law, Jacob focuses on helping clients think ahead. Tax planning is often most valuable before a transaction is finalized, an ownership structure is put in place, or an estate planning decision becomes difficult to change. His role is to help clients understand the tax consequences of those decisions early enough to preserve meaningful planning options.
Jacob’s background allows him to look at tax planning from both a business and personal wealth perspective. For entrepreneurs and business owners, those two areas are often closely connected. A decision involving a company, investment, ownership interest, or future transaction can also affect an individual’s estate plan, family wealth, and overall tax position.
Before joining Covello Tax Law, Jacob practiced with large national and regional law firms, where he worked on sophisticated tax matters for individuals and businesses. He also served as a law clerk with the United States Tax Court, giving him additional perspective on how tax positions are analyzed when they come under scrutiny. He is admitted to practice in Colorado and before the United States Tax Court.
Jacob earned both his J.D. and LL.M. in Tax from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
